History

MG, Morris Garages which is the iconic British Motoring Brand, prominent for its sporty design and inspiring look with excellent driving value of safety and high-tech.
Let's dig up the Legendary History of MG, Morris Garages since 1924.

1924 - The Beginning of Morris Garages

The father of MG, Cecil Kimber, joined Morris Cars in 1921 and in 1922, he became a General Manager. Then, he started to produce his own version of Morris cars and they were named Morris Garages.



1929 - Moving to Abingdon

Since MG’s popularity had risen and grown, MG ultimately moved to a town that became synonymous with the marque, Abingdon. This town would play host to MG production for the next 50 years.



1930 - The Birth of MG Car Club

MG car club is born on 12th October 1930. About 30 members attended the gathering at the Roebuck Hotel. Afterwards, the club members grew quickly up to 500 members by 1933.



1931 - Magic Midget

MG EX120 became the first 750cc car that exceed 100 with a speed of 103.12 mph and sets a land speed record.



1933 - Record Breaking MG

The MG K3 Magnette won the Mille Miglia, one of the toughest competitions in the world, and became the first non-Italian brand to win the 1100cc class with the help of Captain George Aston and Johnny Lulani.



1945 - MG’s most important export market

During World War II, thousands of American servicemen came across the MG T Type sports cars and they took them home to America. Therefore, this huge demand of the USA becomes MG’s most important export market.



1950 - Silverstone

The first Silverstone International Race Meeting, today known as MGLive! is held. The event has been held annually every year since.


 



1952 - British Motor Corporation

After the ending of World War II, a need for restructuring in the British Motor Industry is detected and so, MG incorporated into one company that included its partners such as Morris and Riley together with rivals like Austin and Wolseley.



1955 - The MGA

In 1955, the most glamourous car to put the MG octagon logo, the MGA had arrived. This model was increased from 1500cc Original power to 1600cc in 1959. Alongside these cars MG also produced a Twin-cam model, producing 106bhp. Over 100,000 MGAs were produced with almost 96,000 of these exported from the UK.



A Famous Badge1957 - Breaking Record

EX 181 which was designed based on the MGA was taken to the Bonneville Salts flats and the result was MG broke the world record. The 1489cc engine developed 290bhp and legendary driver Sir Stirling Moss took the car to an incredible 245.64mph.



Launching MGA 1959

MG decided to launch the next step and launch MGA, which is an updated version of the popular MGA 1500. Equipped with a 1588cc engine, it also provides power for the MGA which could lift up the people to the sky.



1962 - The MGB

The MGB roadster which is the best selling MG of all time had arrived in 1962. This was the first modern MG and it was the first car from the marque to use monocoque construction, rather than a separate chassis as the MGA and others had. The majority of MGB would be sent to the United States and it remained in production until 1980.


 



1965 - MG BGT

In 1965, BGT model with fascinating design which is a combination of the new roof styling came courtesy of the legendary Italian design house Pininfarina and the B’s sporting appeal with the practicality of a hatchback, made a great debut of Grand Tour.


 



1967 - The MGC & MGC GT

After the proof of a huge success of MGB, the idea of broadening the cars’ range had got. This idea was followed by the creation of MGC. This model was limited edition and ceased the production in 1969, with the Prince of Wales Prince Charles being one of the most famous owners.



1968 - British Leyland was Born

Leyland Motors joint forces with BMC and generated British Leyland. Under Under British Leyland, MG would work alongside Jaguar, Rover and Triumph.



1973 - MG BGT V8

MG had access to a wider range of engines after being part of British Leyland and this included 3.5 litre Rover V8 engine. In early 1970s, Turner Ken Costello had started to convert the regular MGB and GT to V8 power. In 1970, the factory built car was launched due to popular reviews.



1980 - Abingdon was closed

MG marque was too popular to disappear and so in May 1982, the MG Metro 1,300 had been launched. It became one of the first hot hatches and followed by a faster version, the MG Metro Turbo a year later. MG Metro evinced the huge success.

1985 - Joining hand with Group B

Manufacturers such as Audi and Peugeot getting a huge publicity with their rally cars, supercar performance and superstar drivers. The owner of MG at that time, Austin Rover, tried to get a small slide of attention, so he introduced the MG Metro 6R4 which had a 3.0, V6 engine in the rear and developed over 410bhp.


 



1990 - THE MG CAR CLUB OPENS

In 1990, the MG Car Club was opened in its headquarter named in honor of MG’s founder, Cecil Kimber. Kimber House was always behind the original factory works, on the very road that all MGs were driven on following production.



1992 - Reborn of a Legend

The popularity of MGB and classic cars in general started to grow and there was a lesser demand for sportscar once again through the 1980s. By this time MG was part of what was known as Rover Group – with the company’s portfolio slimmed down to just Rover cars.


 



1995 - The MGF

There was a huge excitement even before the launching of MGF since it was the first all-new MG sportscar since 1962. It was super innovative with a mid-engine and gas suspension. It became a best-seller rapidly across the world. By that time, the Rover Group was under the ownership of BMW and they did not want the MG to compete with their Z Sports cars, the MGF was never made it to the USA.



2001 - New Scope

In 2001, BMW sold its interest to the Rover Group and a new company named MG Rover Group was formed. That new company rapidly set the work, launch triplex of cars based on Rover saloons and hatchbacks and the results were MG ZR, ZS, ZT and ZT-T. At same time, the MGF was heavily revised, becoming the MG TF.



2003 - MG SV

The MG Xpower SV was launched in 2003. Due to its fascinating style, carbon fiber body and Mustang-source 4.6 litre V8, the SV was irresistible. Before MG Rover’s ending in 2005, less than 100 SVs were completed.



2007 - A Chance

A Chance Due to MG Rover ending in 2005, many thought that MG marque would be ended soon. MG was being silent over the years and came back for the first time in China. Nanjing Automotive Corporation (NAC) bought the production rights of the MG TF, MG ZR and MG ZT.



2010 - MG6

After the MG had changed its ownership, MG did relaunching in 2010. The MG6 GT (Fastback) which was designed and engineered in the UK was introduced in 2010 and MG Magnette (Saloon). Before the arriving of GT in Britain in April 2011 followed by Magnette in June 2011, MG6 was released in China in 2010.



2012 - The come back of British Touring Car Championship

The come back of British Touring Car Championship in 2012, MG returned to the Premier Championship of British motorsport, the British Touring Car Championship. Jason Plato finished third overall in 2012 and Plato repeated his third place finish also in 2013. Finally, MG got the feeling of victory in 2014 winning against Honda and claimed the 2014 Manufacturer’s Championship, with high score of 950.

MG Motor used the slogan – Fun is Back when MG 3 was launched to the UK market in 2013. This supermini car had been designed like a Longbridge which represents the British sense for almost 50 years. 2015 - MG GS

For the first time since last 90 years, MG had produced an SUV. The MG GS was launched in early 2015, entering mainly to the Middle East and Asia Market. This car fit as last producing a Sports Utility Vehicle with its sporting heritage, another sports car firm to cross over into SUV territory..



2017 - MG 360

MG 360 provided the largest cabin in its class. The super-long wheelbase offered a more comfortable and lively driving experience, with plenty of room for everyone who rides in.



2017 - MG ZS
